Pidgin

Thanks to ZDNet and Pidgin for screenshots.

Do you use MSN Messenger? Google Talk? ICQ or Yahoo! Messenger? All those logins can be hard to remember, and all the software is taking up lots of room on your computer. [Drum roll] Ta-Da! Introducing Pidgin 2.0. Pidgin 2.0 was previously known as Gaim, and because its a bit like AIM they were sued by AOL, thus the name change. Anyway Pidgin is a small, custoomiseable program that allows you to login to nearly ALL your chat accounts and you can use most of the features the stand-alone versions too. As an added bonus its available cross platform and is totally free.
Pidgin for windows is 10.9mb and lets you log into your AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP (includes Google Talk), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, and Zephyr accounts simultaneously and chat with friends on all the networks.

Considering Windows Live Messenger ranges from 17.2 to 35.2mb and Yahoo Messenger and ICQ are around the 10mb mark 10.9 mb is not bad for cross-compatibility.

I give Pidgin a 7/10. Losing out because of the lack of non-essential features such as no video support but other than that its great.

Smilie packs and themes are also available for download and finch the text based equivilant od Pidgin can be downloaded from the following links.

And We're Online!

My Software Recommendations is online! This site will provide information about free, open source software that's useful and easy to use. And first on our list: Mozilla Firefox!

OK we've all heard of "the other browser". We've all seen the numerous a
ds on various sites but really, what makes Firefox better than Internet Explorer? The current release of Firefox is Firefox2 but the alpha build of Firefox3 (code-named Grand Paradiso) can be downloaded through Mozilla's FTP Site. Be warned though! As its alpha its mean for testing only, it is incomplete and unsupported, so don't install it if you are worried about your computers health. Go for the supported and 110% safe Firefox2.
Firefox2
The most amazing thing about Firefox is its customizability. Its infinitely changeable in any way you want. Bundle that with incredible Pop-Up blocking, Increased Security, Online Support Communities, Tabbed Browsing, Spell-Checking, Built-In Search Engine and Feed Reader, Download Manager, Excellent Accessibility and a Streamlined Interface and you've got yourself one hell of a browser.

Some of my favourite Firefox add-ons are:

*Greasemonkey - Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript

*AdBlock Plus - Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that
often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install
Adblock Plus now and get rid of them

*MouseZoom- Zoom into webpages easily with the mouse. Good for small text.

Many Themes are available to change the look and feel of Firefox to suit the user also. So If your interested in Firefox now, follow the links below.
